The first ecclesiastical laws were delivered by the Holy Apostles themselves, who delivered them in the form of canons. As Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, these and several subsequent canons (especially those of the Ecumenical or Imperial Councils) were added to the Roman law. All Orthodox Christians, whether clergy or laymen, are instructed by the Holy Fathers to obey the laws of the Church. But unfortunately, due to the rise of liberalism within the Orthodox world, many layman are unaware of the canons. The purpose of the following articles is to introduce Orthodox Christians to, and instruct them in, the sacred ecclesiastical laws. |
